Wind Moved Your DStv Dish? How to Tell and What to Do

Signs the wind has shifted your dish
The clearest clue is timing: signal was fine before the wind and poor immediately after. Typical symptoms include lower readings on the decoder's signal screen than you are used to, pixelation in weather that never used to cause trouble, some channels breaking up before others, or a permanent searching-for-signal message after a severe blow. From the ground, look for a dish that sits at a different angle to its neighbours, a rotated mount, a drooping LNB arm, or fresh gaps around the mounting bolts.
Why a tiny shift causes a big problem
The satellite serving DStv sits tens of thousands of kilometres away, and your dish must point at it with remarkable precision. The beam a dish focuses is narrow, so even a small rotation on the pole spreads your aim off the satellite and the received signal falls away sharply. This is also why nudging the dish by hand almost always makes things worse: the adjustment that matters is smaller than the amount the dish flexes when you touch it.
What to do, and what not to do
Do a reboot first to rule out coincidence, and check connectors have not been tugged loose by a whipping cable. Then compare your signal readings with clear-sky conditions. If they are well down and the wind is the obvious culprit, book a realignment rather than attempting one. A technician peaks the dish against a meter at the dish itself, checks the mount is still solid, and tightens or replaces hardware so the next wind does not repeat the damage.
Avoid climbing onto wet or windy roofs, and avoid loosening mounting bolts to experiment. A dish that was marginal but watchable can easily become completely lost, turning a quick realignment into a longer job. If the dish or its mount has visibly failed, keep people away from the area until it is secured, because a loose dish in the next strong gust is a genuine hazard to anyone below.
Can wind really move a properly installed dish?
A sound installation resists ordinary wind, but severe gusts, fatigued bolts, a slightly undersized pole, or a mount into weathered wall plugs can all give way over time. Wind also loosens things gradually, so a dish may survive many storms and then shift in a moderate one.
How do I stop my dish moving again?
Ask your installer to check the mounting when realigning. A rigid pole of the right diameter, sound anchors into solid brick, properly torqued clamp bolts, and a sensible location out of the worst wind exposure all help. A dish that keeps shifting is telling you the mount, not the weather, is the problem.
