How DStv Extra View Works (Simple Explanation)
Extra View lets you run more than one decoder on a single DStv subscription, so different rooms can watch different channels at the same time without paying for separate full subscriptions. The decoders are linked to each other through cabling and registered together on your account, with a monthly access fee per extra decoder. It is the standard solution for the bedroom TV, the kids' lounge or the cottage, and it works well when installed correctly.
The Basic Idea
With Extra View, one primary decoder and up to two additional decoders operate under one subscription. Each decoder tunes its own channels independently, so the main lounge can watch sport while a bedroom watches a series. You pay your normal subscription once, plus an access fee for each linked decoder, which works out far cheaper than separate subscriptions. All the decoders sit on one account, one bill and one set of account details.
How the Decoders Are Physically Linked
Extra View decoders do not talk over WiFi; they communicate through a physical cable link, called a heartbeat, that runs between them. This is usually carried over the existing coaxial cabling in the installation. The link lets the decoders confirm they are in the same home, which is a condition of the service. Because of this cabling requirement, Extra View is as much an installation job as an account change, and sloppy cabling is behind most Extra View problems.
Setting It Up on Your Account
On the account side, each decoder's serial and smart card numbers are registered and linked together on your subscription, which you or your installer arrange through DStv's self-service channels or call centre. On the installation side, the dish, LNB and cabling must support the number of decoders being fed, and older single-output LNBs often need upgrading. A good installer handles both halves and tests every decoder before leaving, confirming each one stays authorised on its own.
What Extra View Is Not
Extra View is designed for decoders in the same household, not for linking a decoder at your house with one at a friend's or relative's place, and the heartbeat link exists specifically to enforce that. It is also not a way to get extra recording capacity; each decoder keeps its own capabilities, so an HD decoder in the bedroom still cannot record. Knowing these limits upfront saves disappointment and keeps your account on the right side of the service rules.
How many decoders can I link with Extra View?
A primary decoder plus up to two additional decoders can share one subscription, making three viewing points in total. Each additional decoder carries its own monthly access fee on top of the subscription. The right combination of decoder models depends on where you want recording features.
Can the linked decoders watch different channels at the same time?
Yes, that is the whole point. Each decoder tunes independently, so every room chooses its own channel, and an Explora in the link can record as normal. The decoders share the subscription and the dish, not the picture, so nobody has to watch what the lounge is watching.
Do I need a new dish for Extra View?
Usually not a new dish, but often a different LNB and additional cabling, because the existing setup may only feed one decoder. The heartbeat link between decoders also has to be cabled in. An assessment of your current installation will tell you exactly what needs to change.
