TV Remote Not Working: The Complete Checklist
A dead remote is either a remote problem, a TV problem, or something silly standing between the two, and there is a neat test for each. Before you buy a replacement, work through this checklist: fresh batteries, the phone-camera infrared test, a look at the sensor path, and re-pairing for Bluetooth smart remotes. Most remotes people throw away are actually fine, and most that are genuinely broken can be replaced cheaply.
Batteries: not as obvious as you think
Start with a brand-new set of batteries, not a set borrowed from another remote, because partially drained batteries can power the LED weakly enough to fail at range while seeming fine up close. Check the contacts inside the battery bay for white or green corrosion, which is common in humid weather; clean it gently with a cotton bud and a little vinegar, then dry thoroughly before refitting fresh batteries.
The phone-camera IR test
Infrared light is invisible to your eye but visible to most phone cameras. Open the camera, point the remote's front end at the lens, and hold any button. A working IR remote shows a small flashing light on the screen. If you see the flash, the remote is transmitting and the fault sits with the TV's sensor. If you see nothing on any button with fresh batteries, the remote itself has failed.
Note that many front cameras filter infrared more aggressively than rear cameras, so try both. Also remember this test only applies to infrared remotes; Bluetooth smart remotes won't flash for most buttons.
Check the path to the sensor
The TV's IR sensor usually sits behind the bottom bezel. A soundbar placed in front of it, a decoder stacked too close, or even a glass cabinet door can block or scatter the signal. Move obstructions, aim directly at the sensor from a couple of metres, and try again. Bright sunlight flooding the sensor can also swamp IR signals, which explains remotes that only misbehave at certain times of day.
Re-pairing smart remotes
Modern smart remotes from Samsung, LG and others use Bluetooth for most functions and can simply lose their pairing after a power cut or battery change. Each brand has a re-pair procedure, typically holding two specific buttons together while close to the TV until a pairing message appears; check your model's manual for the exact combination. If the remote controls power but nothing else, a lost pairing is almost certainly the cause.
Stopgaps and when the TV is the problem
While you sort it out, most smart TVs can be driven from the manufacturer's phone app over your home WiFi, and every TV has physical buttons or a joystick hidden on the frame or back panel. If a known-good replacement remote also fails and the app works, the TV's IR receiver or control board is faulty, which is a small, worthwhile repair rather than a reason to replace the set.
Why does my remote only work up close?
Weak batteries are the usual cause: the IR LED still fires but too dimly to reach across the room. Fit a genuinely new set. If the range stays poor, the LED or its driver circuit is degrading, or the TV sensor is partially obstructed or failing behind the bezel.
Can I use my phone as a TV remote?
Usually, yes. Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense and most other brands offer official remote apps that connect over your home WiFi, provided the phone and TV are on the same network. It's a genuinely useful backup while you repair or replace the physical remote.
My DStv remote works but the TV remote doesn't. Is that a clue?
Yes, a useful one. It proves the TV area isn't flooded with interfering light and that IR can physically reach your equipment. The fault is therefore isolated to the TV remote or the TV's own IR sensor, which the phone-camera test will separate in about ten seconds.
