Nine times out of ten it is the power supply board. The mains spike when power is restored damages it, and the set goes completely dead or clicks without starting. It is a repair we do constantly and one of the more affordable ones, so it is almost always worth fixing.
There is sound but the screen is black. Is the TV finished?
Usually not. If you can hear sound, the set is running — what has failed is nearly always the backlight. Shine a torch at an angle on the screen and if you can faintly see a picture, it is confirmed. Backlight strips are replaceable and far cheaper than a new television.
How much will the repair cost before I commit?
