When your decoder sits on a searching-for-signal message, it means no usable signal is reaching the tuner at all. The cause lies somewhere along the chain from satellite to dish to LNB to cable to decoder, and the fastest way to find it is to work through the chain methodically instead of guessing. The steps below run from the most likely and easiest fixes to the ones that need professional equipment, in the order worth trying them.

Step 1: Rule out the simple stuff

Check the weather first, because a violent storm overhead can blank the signal entirely until it passes. If skies are clear, power the decoder off at the wall for thirty seconds and let it reboot fully, since tuners occasionally hang after power dips. While it restarts, confirm the TV is on the correct input and the message is genuinely from the decoder, not a TV showing an empty HDMI port. These three items resolve a surprising number of callouts.

Step 2: Check the cable path

With the decoder off, unscrew the cable from the LNB IN port and inspect the connector. The centre pin should be straight and clean, not corroded, bent, or surrounded by stray braid wires touching it. Retighten it finger-tight, then follow the visible cable to the wall plate or entry point, looking for crush damage, chew marks, tight staples, or taped joins. Any join wrapped in insulation tape is a prime suspect, because tape lets water wick into the cable.

Step 3: Look at the dish from the ground

Without climbing anything, stand where you can see the dish. It should look firmly mounted and aimed the same way as it always has, with the LNB arm intact and the cable secured along it. A dish tilted oddly, rotated on its pole, or wobbling in the breeze after wind or a bumped ladder explains the lost signal. Also check nothing new blocks its view, like tree growth, a new wall, or builders' scaffolding, since satellite reception needs a clear line of sight.

Step 4: Know when to stop and call

If a reboot, sound cabling, and an unobstructed, normal-looking dish still leave you searching for signal, the remaining suspects are dish alignment, a failed LNB, or hidden cable damage. All three need a signal meter to confirm, and dish alignment in particular cannot be done accurately by trial and error against a decoder screen inside the house. This is the sensible point to hand over to an accredited installer rather than risking the roof.

Why does my decoder search for signal after load shedding?

Power interruptions can leave the decoder's tuner in a stuck state, and the surge when power returns can stress the LNB, which is powered through the cable. A full power-cycle fixes the stuck state. If the message appears after every outage, surge protection is a worthwhile addition.
