Why DStv Loses Signal When It Rains
Satellite TV signals travel from space through the atmosphere to your dish, and heavy rain absorbs and scatters them along the way. This is called rain fade, and every satellite system on earth experiences it to some degree. The important question is how much rain it takes to knock out your picture. A well-installed dish rides out most storms, while a marginal installation drops signal the moment clouds build, which is the difference worth understanding.
What rain fade actually is
DStv broadcasts in the Ku frequency band, which delivers excellent picture quality but is absorbed by water in the atmosphere. During a heavy downpour, especially the intense thunderstorms Gauteng gets in summer, raindrops between your dish and the satellite soak up enough of the signal that the decoder can no longer decode it, and the picture pixelates or cuts out entirely. Once the heaviest rain cell passes, the signal returns on its own with no damage done.
Good installs versus marginal installs
Every installation has a signal margin, the buffer between the level your dish delivers on a clear day and the minimum the decoder needs. A dish that is slightly off-aim, an ageing LNB, or lossy connectors eat into that margin, leaving nothing in reserve.
That is why the pattern of your dropouts matters. Losing picture for a few minutes at the peak of a violent hailstorm is normal physics. Losing picture in light rain, drizzle, or even heavy cloud means your margin is nearly gone, and the installation, not the weather, is the real problem.
What you can do about it
You cannot stop the rain, but you can restore your margin. Have the dish peaked precisely with a signal meter, replace corroded or water-damaged connectors, and test the LNB, because these three items account for most weather-sensitive installations we see. In areas with frequent intense storms, a larger dish adds margin by gathering more signal. After any severe storm with strong wind or hail, a quick signal check confirms the dish has not shifted.
Is it normal for DStv to cut out in a thunderstorm?
Brief interruptions during the most intense part of a heavy storm are normal for any satellite service, and the signal recovers as the storm passes. What is not normal is losing signal in light rain or overcast conditions, which indicates your installation has too little signal margin left.
Can a bigger dish stop rain fade?
It cannot eliminate rain fade, but a larger dish collects more signal, which raises your margin and means it takes much heavier rain to interrupt viewing. It is a worthwhile upgrade in storm-prone areas, provided the dish is properly aligned and the rest of the installation is sound.
Why does my neighbour's DStv work in rain when mine drops?
You are both under the same weather, so the difference is the installation. Their dish likely has better alignment, a healthier LNB, or better-condition cabling, giving them more margin before the picture breaks up. A signal test on your system will show exactly where your margin is being lost.
